Rhodochrosite is known for its beautiful soft pink color. This typical color is caused by a manganese compound. The mineral Rhodochrosite found in Romania is first mentioned in 1813. However, the most beautiful Rhodochrosite comes from Argentina, where the mineral has been known to the local population for much longer.

Naming

Rhodochrosite is composed of the Greek of the words: 'Rhodon' which means Pink and 'Chroma' which stands for color. Literally 'pink color'. In Dutch, this mineral is also called 'Manganese Spat'. These pieces show a nice layered structure.
