Colorless Mica
Muscovite is the most well-known member of the mica family. With its beautiful transparent and wafer-thin blades it is a remarkable appearance. Against the light muscovite crystals are quite transparent and almost colourless. The pseudo hexagonal crystals are also called 'books' because they can be split into paper thin slices.
Naming muscovite
Muscovite has the ability to split into thin transparent sheets, in some cases up to one metre in diameter. Around 1700 these sheets were mined in the area around Moscow and then used as windows. These windows were called "muscovy glass". The name for the mineral was derived from this.
