Rare earth elements
Titanite is a fluorine-containing calcium-titanium-silicate and contains small amounts of the rare earth elements such as lanthanium, cerium, praseodymium, samarium and neodymium. The name titanite is derived from the element titanium. The name 'sphene' comes from the Greek word 'Sphenos' and means 'wedge' due to the wedge-shaped crystal growth.
Sphene or titanite?
Before 1982, the name sphene was mainly used for this mineral. However, in 1982 the International Mineralogical Association decided to officially name it 'titanite'. This was quickly adopted by geologists and mineralogists. The gemological community was less enthusiastic and continued to use the name "sphene". In practice this means that the clear crystals of gem quality or the cut stones are called sphene instead of titanite.
Spiritual effects of titanite
Titanite has a calming and balancing effect on moods and emotions. It supports the immune system and works as a general all-round healing crystal. On a spiritual level, it is a good support for opening and clearing the Third Eye and the Crown Chakras, allowing for further spiritual growth. On an emotional level, this crystal helps release stagnant emotions and grief.
