Heating of amethyst

By heating amethyst between 300 and 400 degrees celcius, it loses its purple colour and becomes brown/yellow to orange. We speak of heated amethyst or burnt amethyst. Sometimes this is wrongly sold as citrine. However, this is incorrect. The colour may not be natural, but the crystals are 100% real! These crystals comes from Brazil.

what is amethyst

Amethyst is a purple variant of quartz and owes its typical purple color to the presence of iron that is colored purple by the ionizing radiation (or radioactive radiation) from the earth. This amethyst is burnt and therefore yellow in color. The heating can cause cracks and fissures in the crust.
