Pomegranate
The garnet is named after the Latin 'granatus' which refers to the pomegranate. This is a plant with red seeds that are about the same color as the red garnets. However, the family is much larger; the term garnet refers to a group of closely related minerals that includes more than twenty species, each with varieties within those species. The five main garnet types are pyrope, almandine, grossulite, andradite and spessartine. Garnets are found all over the world in many varieties.
Garnet Groups
The garnet family consists of two groups namely the Pyralspite group and the Ugrandite group. The subdivision is as follows:
Pyralspite group
- Pyrope: magnesium-aluminium composition. Colour: deep red to almost black
- Almandine: iron-aluminium composition. Colour: deep red to brownish red
- Spessartite: manganese-aluminium compound. Colour: orange yellow to purple red
Ugrandite group
- Uvarovite: calcium-chromium composition. Colour bright green
- Andradite: calcium-iron composition. Colour: red, yellow, brown, green, black
- Grossulaar: calcium-aluminium composition. Colour green, cinnamon brown, red, yellow
