Dioptase is a beautiful green coloured mineral that occurs in the vicinity of copper deposits. Because of its colour it is also called 'copper emerald'. The mineral is not very rare but the beautifully formed crystals are and are only found in a handful of places in the world. Dioptase crystals are quite fragile and can easily break or crumble, so it is advisable to handle them with care.
Origin of the name dioptase
Dioptase has been known to man since ancient times. However, the mineral was first described in 1797. The name dioptase comes from Greek and stands for 'through' (Dia) and 'see' (Optasia). This because of the possibility to see the internal cleavage surfaces in a transparent crystal. Beautiful dioptase crystals are very popular with collectors and can become quite valuable.
Stone of forgiveness
In addition to collecting dioptase, the stone also has a number of properties. Dioptase is seen as the stone of forgiveness and helps to let go of mistakes made in the past. Dioptase helps you to come to terms with yourself and focus on the future. It is therefore an ideal stone to process the past.
