What is rhyolite?
Rhyolite is a coagulation rock and is pushed to the surface by volcanic activity. It occurs when granite magma quietly steams out of a volcano and the lava cools down quickly. When the lava cools down so quickly that no crystals can be formed, we speak of volcanic glass, better known as obsidian. When the magma cools down a bit slower, rhyolite is formed. This bag contains 950 grams of stones, most of which measure between 1 and 2 cm.
Volcano eruptions of granite magma
Volcanic eruptions of granite magma are rare. Only three have been known since 1900. The Andrew Strait volcano in Papua New Guinea, the Novarupta volcano in Alaska and the Chaiten Volcano in Chile. In the past, the most explosive volcanic eruptions were due to granite magma. Examples are Yellowstone in Wyoming, Long Valley in California and Valles in New Mexico.
