Dumortierite: A Unique Mineral

Dumortierite is a mineral distinguished by its striking blue to purple colour. This aluminium borosilicate mineral is named after the French paleontologist Eugène Dumortier and is often found in metamorphic rocks and encapsulated in quartz. In encapsulated form, it is also known as dumortierite quartz.

Historical and Industrial Applications of Dumortierite

In Africa, it was once believed that dumortierite was petrified water. This was likely due to a combination of the blue colour and the fact that it was often found near water sources. Since the 1920s, dumortierite has also been used in the production of porcelain and ceramic products, because of its colour and its ability to withstand high temperatures.
