What is zircon?

Zircon is a mineral belonging to the group of nesosilicates and is a source of the metal zirconium. It occurs in the Earth's crust as a mineral in igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Zircon is hard and chemically stable and highly weather-resistant. It has a high refractive index and is sometimes used as a diamond substitute. The name Zircon comes from the Persian word "zargun", meaning "golden". It can occur in many different colours, including colourless, yellow-gold, red, brown, blue and green.

Eldest minerals on earth

Zircon is often used for geochronology because it contains uranium and thorium and can be dated using modern analytical techniques. Zircons from Jack Hills in Western Australia have been dated to 4.404 billion years and are considered the oldest minerals dated on Earth so far. The oxygen isotopic composition of some of these zircons is interpreted as evidence that there was water on the Earth's surface more than 4.4 billion years ago.
