Is barite heavy?
Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulphate (BaSO4). It gets its name from the Greek word "barys" meaning "heavy". And that is not surprising, baryte is particularly heavy for a mineral that contains no metal. Also, barite serves as a main ore for extracting the element 'barium'.
Recognising barite
Because of its weight, barite is easy to recognise. Its specific gravity is 4 or higher, making it a lot heavier than quartz, for instance. However, its hardness is again a lot lower and comes in between 2.5 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale. Barite is colourless in its pure form, but can take on various colours due to impurities.
Barite for Stability and Safety
Barite offers stability and security and helps you stand in your power. It reduces insecurity, feelings of inferiority and improves communication. It protects against radiation and has a positive effect on mental fatigue, depression and addictions. Furthermore, barite cleanses and balances the chakras and is ideal for meditation because of its calming properties.
