Arfvedsonite was first discovered in 1823. It is named after Johan August Arfwedson (1792-1841), a Swedish chemist who also discovered the element 'lithium'. Arfvedsonite is an uncommon mineral found in small quantities in various parts of the world. It forms long prismatic crystals and can be black to blue in colour. Polished and polished arfvedsonite forms a true play of light of blue hues.

Arfvedsonite or astrophyllite?

Arfvedsonite is often offered as astrophyllite or confused with nuummite. While astrophyllite also forms long crystals, it is easily recognised by its copper colour. Nuummite can occur in the same colours but does not form long elongated crystals like arfvedsonite.
