Kambaba jasper is known by various names such as eldarite or crocodile jasper and is only found in Madagascar. The name kambaba jasper has been in use for a long time, but research has shown that it is incorrect. The rock is not jasper at all, but a quartz with aegerine and feldspar spheres. A composition that also occurs in Mexico, but in reversed colours. This stone is known under the name nebula stone.

It is also sometimes claimed that Kambaba jasper is a stromatolite and therefore consists of fossil algae. However, studies have shown that it really is a volcanic rock (rhyolite) and not a fossil.
