What is barite?

Barite is a mineral composed of barium sulphate (BaSO4). It gets its name from the Greek word "barys" meaning "heavy". And that's not surprising, baryte is particularly heavy for a mineral that contains no metal. Also, barite serves as a main ore for extracting the element 'barium'.

What is celestine?

Celestine (or celestite) is a strontium sulphate mineral discovered is 1790. The name comes from the Latin word: 'Caelestis' meaning 'heavenly' and refers to the sky-blue colour the crystals can have. However, the crystals can also be colourless to grey.
